Civil litigation resolves disputes between private parties, and understanding its overall arc helps make sense of each individual procedural step.

Civil vs. Criminal Litigation

Civil litigation resolves private disputes (contracts, personal injury, property) typically seeking monetary damages or another specific remedy, distinct from criminal cases brought by the government seeking punishment.

The Litigation Timeline

A typical civil case moves through pre-filing investigation, pleadings, discovery, pre-trial motions, and potentially trial and appeal, a process that can take anywhere from months to years depending on complexity.

Parties to a Lawsuit

The plaintiff initiates the lawsuit and the defendant responds; a case can also involve multiple plaintiffs or defendants, third-party defendants, and in some cases a class of similarly situated plaintiffs.

Action Step

Sketch a simple timeline diagram showing the major phases of civil litigation from filing to potential trial.
