Affiliate marketing means earning a commission when someone buys or signs up through your unique link. The merchant pays only for results, and your job is to connect the right buyers with the right products through helpful content.

The Parties

The merchant sells the product, the affiliate promotes it, the customer buys, and often an affiliate network sits in the middle handling tracking, reporting and payments.

Commission Types

Programs may pay a percentage of each sale, a flat fee per sale or lead, or recurring commissions for as long as a subscriber keeps paying. Recurring programs can be especially valuable for software and memberships.

Cookies and Attribution

When someone clicks your link, a tracking cookie or identifier records the referral for a set window — sometimes a day, sometimes months. Attribution rules decide who gets credit if a buyer clicked several affiliates’ links.

Common Pitfall

Assuming affiliate income is passive from the start ignores the ongoing content creation, updating and promotion it requires.

Action Step

Read the terms of three affiliate programs in a niche that interests you and note commission rates, cookie windows and payout rules.

Educational content only. Affiliate income varies widely and many people earn little or nothing; no earnings are guaranteed. Always follow the FTC (or your local equivalent) disclosure rules, each program’s terms, and platform policies. This is not legal or tax advice.
