Business analysts help organisations understand problems and define changes that deliver value. The role sits between the people who have a need and the people who build or change something to meet it.
Core Responsibilities
Understanding the problem and its causes, working with stakeholders to discover needs, defining and documenting requirements, helping teams prioritise, and checking that the delivered solution actually solves the problem.
What It Isn’t
A business analyst isn’t simply a note-taker who writes down requests, and usually isn’t the person who designs the technical solution. The value lies in questioning, clarifying and connecting.
Analysis Mindset
Curiosity, clear communication, comfort with detail, and a focus on outcomes rather than on any particular solution. Good analysts ask “why” and “what happens when” more than anyone else in the room.
Common Pitfall
Starting with a solution before understanding the problem often produces features nobody needs, delivered on time and on budget.
